Report on Strategy for Management and Reduction of Construction and Demolition Waste in Hong Kong

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) recently released the Report on Strategy for Management and Reduction of Construction and Demolition Waste in Hong Kong (Report). This Report provides the findings of a snapshot survey of the composition of typical construction waste and provides recommendations for future study, management and reduction of construction and demolition waste in Hong Kong.

The Report covers the following:
(a)  a literature review on overseas policies and measures for management and reduction of construction waste;
(b) a literature review on the current statutory and administrative measures for management and reduction of construction waste in public works and private works projects;
(c) the findings of an initial snapshot survey for the non-inert construction waste composition in Hong Kong;
(d) proposals and appropriate methodology (upstream or downstream approach) for the further survey of non-inert construction waste composition; and
(e) proposed strategy and measures for management and reduction of construction waste.

     “The on-site snapshot survey, review findings, focus group meetings and recommendations stated in the report could be a valuable reference for the construction industry.” Ir Kevin POOLE, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment of the CIC said.
     “Wood and timber waste contributed the highest proportion to the non-inert waste in the survey due to the use of timber formwork. The strategies of waste management and reduction may put more emphasis on the usage and reuse/recycle of wood and timber or other alternative methods especially during temporary construction work.” Ir Ringo YU, Chairperson of the Task Force on Strategy for Management and Reduction of Construction and Demolition Waste in Hong Kong under the Committee on Environment of the CIC added.
