The world's largest TBM is now in operation in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the "Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok" tunnel worksite is welcoming a newcomer: the world's largest tunnel boring machine. Specially designed for this worksite, the 17.6 metre wide device combines three innovations masterminded by the Bouygues Construction Research & Developmentteams. An outstanding partner for a far-reaching worksite.

This exceptional tunnel boring machine (TBM) includes three main innovations:
-	Mobydic: this is a system of sensors integrated into the TBM heads, it is possible to check that the cutting wheels are not too worn and to map the rock walls in real time.
-	Snake: unveiled at the Bouygues Construction Innovation Campus, this remotely controlled arm cleans and unclogs the TBM heads to make it easier to inspect them.
-	Telemach: this brand new innovation is used for the first time here. This robot, the peripheral cutting wheels can be changed mechanically.

Measuring 5 km in length and dug out 50 metres under the sea, the Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok tunnel will eventually provide access to Lantau Island and Hong Kong International Airport. A complex project, it requires working in an environment where the pressure is high (over 5 bars). Among the site's 800 workers, teams of divers carry out maintenance operations. It is a real technical challenge for the workers.
