"Stories from Island East" Exhibition
Combining text, historic images and personal mementoes, the "Stories from Island East" Exhibition showcases Swire Properties' new publication Stories from Island East, which documents the lives of 15 elderly residents in the Island East district. The book is a narrative of Island East's evolution, as well as a touching account of the everyday lives of its long-term inhabitants. Visitors to the exhibition can pick up the book for free at the venue.
Set against the backdrop of the mid-20th century, when Hong Kong was experiencing a period of rapid growth, these 15 elderly residents narrate their experiences growing up in a different era, finding love and raising families, and establishing careers which ultimately contributed to the development of the district. Stories from Island East also reflects the historical changes in Hong Kong over the decades, as well as the undaunted spirit of our older generations in the face of changing times.
This project is made possible by the joint efforts of an inter-generational volunteer team composed of volunteers from Swire Properties' Community Ambassadors, HKYWCA Ming Yue District Elderly Community Centre and students from Tai Koo Primary School and The Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong. The volunteer team dedicated their time to conducting home visits and interviews with the residents and compiling their oral histories into this book. The project not only helped record important changes that have taken place in Island East's history, but also offered the opportunity for everyone involved to form new friendships across different generations, allowing the stories of Island East to be passed on to new generations.
