Guangzhou to build a second airport in Nansha confirmed

The master plan for the development of Nansha in the next 20 years was recently approved. It is confirmed that Guangzhou will build a second airport in Nansha. It is proposed that the new commercial airport, with 2 runways, will be located at Dai Gang in the northern part of Nansha.

There was also a proposal submitted earlier that a medium to small size airport catered for business flights to be built on San Man Island, which is located in the western part of Nansha and near Zhongshan. According to analysts, the government favors the construction of an international airport to cope with the long-term economic development of Nansha.

The Guangzhou city government is in the process of inviting tenders for "The Initial Planning and Flexibility Study on the Development of a Second Airport in Guangzhou'. It is specified that the planning and report should be completed within 12 months from the date of contract signing. A preliminary report on the proposed business airport in Nansha New District has to be submitted within 6 months.

The 20-year Nansha development plan covers the entire 803-sq km of Nansha New District. The district is being divided into three zones and will be developed by stages, namely: the 33-sq km Initial Development Zone; the 103-sq km Pearl Bay Zone and the 283-sq km Central Business District. Other infrastructural projects under planning and construction include 5 mass transit lines and 4 Intercity Rail System.

The Nansha New District master plan also governs land use not to exceed 300 sq km, which is approximately 30% of the total area of Nansha.

Nansha is one of the three pilot free-trade zones in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region initiated by the Central Government a decade ago. Nansha, together with Hengqin in Zhuhai and Qianhai in Shenzhen are expected to lead the economic growth of the PRD region and Guangdong province in the next quarter of a century.
