September 22, 2026 Hong Kong's Northern Link Branch Section Gets Green Light The Hong Kong government has formally authorised the Northern Link branch line railway scheme for its Hong Kong section under the Railways Ordinance, allowing construction to proceed with a target to open the branch line together with the main line by 2034 or earlier.
This key transport infrastructure project is designed to integrate with national “15th Five-Year Plan” goals, accelerating the development of the Northern Metropolis and promoting rail transit synergy across the Greater Bay Area .
Route & Scale
The branch line is an approximately 6 km underground railway starting from the main line’s San Tin station.
Hong Kong section: ~5 km
Shenzhen section: ~1 km Stations
Three new stations are planned:

Function & Connectivity
Serves as a cross-border link, connecting Hong Kong’s MTR network with Shenzhen’s metro system at the revamped New Huanggang Port.Provides both local commuting for San Tin Technopole and the Loop area, and cross-border services.
Timeline & Status
The railway scheme was gazetted in June 2026 and received no objections during the statutory consultation period.Transport & Logistics Bureau officials confirmed the project is “ready to start,” with the Hong Kong section’s construction to begin promptly.The branch line is expected to open simultaneously with the main line by 2034 or earlier, representing a two-year acceleration from earlier estimates. Once operational, the journey from San Tin to the New Huanggang Port will take approximately 11 minutes.
