MU77 - 2016 AIA Award winning project by Arshia Architects
The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles announced the winners of its prestigious 2016 Design Awards program on 24 October, 2016. Selected by a jury of distinguished architects based across the United States and conversant in the field’s potential at national and international levels, the design awards honor design excellence in some of the most significant completed projects in the country at this time. Arshia Architects was selected for its MU77 project in Los Angeles.
Located on Mulholland Drive, this single-family residence scheme was molded by the strict regulations of the Mulholland Scenic corridor plan along with extreme site constraints. The residence is integrated into the surrounding landscape with a geometric appearance mimicking the terrain and sudden deviations of rock formations within the natural landscape. Sunken 18 feet below street level to ensure clear views from the street atop the building, fitting the project within the two storey envelop became the main limitation. The private rooms and a convertible office with a sliding partition wall is housed in the upper level and the main living and entertainment centers were situated on the lower level, aligned with the outdoor deck and infinity pool.
Founded in 2006, Arshia Architects is an architecture and design practice that emerged from the tectonic breach of the aesthetic experience and the act of building - purposely fusing this gap with novel substance. Arshia Architects' Los Angeles-based practice is dedicated to the exploration of space and the built environment. They are committed to new ways of thinking in space that provide unique solutions to the complex challenges and parameters that affect architecture.
